Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Monday (September 12), left out all-rounder Stuart Binny and uncapped bowler Shardul Thakur in their trimmed down 15-man squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand at home, starting from September 22. The duo was part of the squad that played in the recently-concluded four-match Test series in West Indies.

With the New Zealand series set to kick-start a long home season, the Sandeep Patil-led selection panel - also comprising Vikram Rathour (North Zone), Saba Karim (Central Zone), MSK Prasad (South Zone) and Gagan Khoda (East Zone) - refrained from tinkering too much with the squad that emerged victorious in West Indies. 

Virat Kohli will have at his disposal the option of playing three spinners in Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra while four pacers - Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav - will jostle for the spots in the fast-bowling department.

Among the batsmen, KL Rahul comes as a handy alternative for the first-choice opening pair of Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay, the former particularly, who has endured a patchy form in Tests recently. Kohli will also be pleased by Cheteshwar Pujara's timely double century in the Duleep trophy final, after having struggled for runs in West Indies. Patil also hinted at handing Rohit Sharma the chance to establish himself in the longer format of the game by providing him with opportunities.

"Rohit (Sharma) is a fabulous player but he hasn't got a longer run in Tests cricket. He has been picked for one Test and then rested an entire season and again picked. So the selection committee, along with coach and captain, have decided that whoever would be picked will be given a fair amount of chances," Patil said while addressing the media after the squad selection.

While the selectors stuck with the core from the previous series, Patil revealed that several senior players - including Gautam Gambhir - came up for discussion during the hour-long meeting. The Delhi captain last played a Test for India in August 2014 in England, but his impressive run of form in the ongoing Duleep Trophy - with scores of 77, 90, 59 and 94 leading up to the final - prompted his ardent fans to arrive in Greater Noida with a 20-feet banner that read 'Bring Back Gambhir'. 

"It is not just Gautam Gambhir, we also have many senior players. It is good that we have younger players to be able to replace a senior player like Gambhir," Patil said, lauding Rahul's recent rise.

New Zealand, who've already arrived in India, will play a warm-up tie against Mumbai in Delhi from September 16, before travelling to Kanpur for the first Test from September 22. After a break of three days, the action will shift to Eden Gardens in Kolkata for the second Test from September 30 before the final game in Indore from October 8. While the seventh-placed visitors will hope to give a good account of themselves and better their rankings, India, currently second, will have their sights firmly set on climbing to the top of the table.

New ICC regime trying to sideline BCCI

BCCI president Anurag Thakur has said the board is being "arm-twisted" on two fronts: as a result of the Lodha committee's recommendations for structural reform, and due to the change at the top of the ICC, where Shashank Manohar has taken charge as the independent chairman. Thakur also took exception to Manohar's remarks that his priorities lay with the ICC and not the BCCI. Manohar had suggested that it wasn't his responsibility but that of the BCCI representative to look after the board's interest at the ICC table.

"I think these [Lodha] recommendations and [the] change in ICC [regime] are arm-twisting BCCI both at home and at the ICC which is not good for Indian cricket," Thakur said. "The situation of BCCI - a global leader till the recommendation of the Lodha committee… now with the new ICC regime they are trying to sideline the BCCI, one of the most important stakeholders in global cricket today. Just [because of] one recommendation, we are not taken seriously."

Thakur, who is in Greater Noida to watch the final of the Duleep Trophy, told reporters that the BCCI, by virtue of being a "global leader", had an obligation to look after the interest of smaller boards. He reiterated the BCCI's concerns over the budget for next year's Champions Trophy in England, which the Indian board felt was three times as much as what was allotted to India for the World T20 earlier this year.

"Yes, BCCI should look after its interests, but BCCI does not only limit itself to look after BCCI's interests," Thakur said. "If he [Manohar] is saying that he has got nothing to do with the BCCI, BCCI is one of the 105 members and one of the most important stakeholders of the ICC today. And, that is why we have raised the issue - when the others kept mum - that we want to go through the Champions Trophy budget.

"Compare the World [T20] Cup with the Champions Trophy - we had 56 matches, Champions Trophy has close to 15 matches; we had eight venues, they had only three venues; it was a 49-day event and the Champions Trophy is only a 20-day event. So the per-match cost is three times higher. Every single penny saved is every single penny earned, not only for BCCI but for 105 countries.

"When you talk about the two-tier Test system, BCCI could have got benefits by joining hands with those associations like Australia and England, but we stood by countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, and to an extent like West Indies."

Thakur questioned Manohar's motives for amending the ICC constitution, which played a part in his being elected unopposed as the first independent chairman of the world body. He contended that Manohar hadn't taken all members into confidence before the amendments were made.

"Mr Shashank Manohar was on the board to make certain changes, amendments. As the president of the board he should have taken into confidence all the BCCI members which he did not," he said. "The amendments were made and he became the independent chairman. Once he has become the independent chairman, he left the BCCI when BCCI needed him the most."

Manchester: Sharjeel Khan and Khalid Latif smashed England's bowlers all round Old Trafford as Pakistan ended their tour in style with a crushing nine-wicket win in Wednesday's lone Twenty20 international.

Left-hander Sharjeel made 59 and fellow opener Latif scored 59 not out as Pakistan, set just 136 to win, finished on 139 for one with 31 balls to spare to the delight of thousands of their fans at a packed Old Trafford.

Sharjeel faced 36 balls with seven fours and three sixes as he put on 107 in just 69 deliveries for the first wicket with Latif.

Right-hander Latif was in for 36 balls, featuring seven fours and three sixes, against an England team fielding the same side beaten in a last-over thriller by the West Indies in the World Twenty20 final in Kolkata in April.

England's miserable night was summed up when wicket-keeper Jos Buttler, on his Lancashire home ground, missed a chance to stump Babar Azam for a duck after the batsman charged down the pitch to off-spinner Moeen Ali.

Flurry of fours

England managed just one boundary in the last 10 overs of their innings, whereas Pakistan sprinted to 36 for none courtesy of nine fours.

Sharjeel struck David Willey for two fours in the first over of the reply and Pakistan never looked back.

He also hoisted Adil Rashid for two sixes in an over to go to fifty before he holed out off the same bowler.

But by then Pakistan were 107 for one and this day/night game was as good as won.

Latif completed a maiden Twenty20 fifty when he hit Ali for six over mid-wicket and struck a four off the next ball for good measure.

Babar (15 not out) hit the winning runs with a four off Liam Plunkett.

Victory saw Sarfraz Ahmed win his first match as Twenty20 captain but England took the overall Super Series 16-12 after the four-Test series was shared 2-2 and the hosts took the one-dayers 4-1.

Pakistan's win under the Old Trafford floodlights was set up by a disciplined display in the field after England were well-placed at 56 without loss.

Left-arm spinner Imad Wasim removed both England openers Jason Roy and Alex Hales on his way to a fine return of two for 17 in his maximum four overs without conceding either a four or a six.

Man-of-the-match Wahab Riaz, a left-arm quick, followed up with three for 18 as Pakistan cleverly mixed up their deliveries.

Hales (37) and Roy (21) were the only batsmen to pass 20 in the innings, with the next-best score Buttler's 16.

Pakistan had an early scare when Wasim, who conceded just two runs in the first over of the game, was struck a painful blow in the next over when a hard-hit shot from Hales reared up off a practice pitch and hit him on the head.

But he returned to stop England's innings in its tracks.

Roy, a good straight hitter, was lbw when trying to reverse-sweep Wasim.

England then lost two wickets in two balls to be 67 for three.

Hales was clean-bowled on the sweep by Wasim off the last ball of the ninth over.

The next delivery saw Joe Root (six) tamely upper-cut Hasan Ali to Shoaib Malik at short third man.

Buttler got off the mark by cover-driving Ali for four before he holed out after slicing Riaz offside.

England's innings never recovered with wicket-keeper Ahmed catching opposing skipper Eoin Morgan (14) off Riaz to leave the hosts 110 for six.

The proposed two-tier system for Test cricket has been shelved by the International Cricket Council (ICC) at the two-day Chief Executives Committee (CEC) meeting in Dubai on Wednesday (September 7) despite the support of six full members. After lengthy discussions on pros and cons of the two-tier structure, the ICC decided not to go ahead with the idea until 2019, and instead, zeroed down on a Test Champion play-off every two years.

The two-day workshop conducted by the ICC concluded today, with the representatives of the 10-Test playing nations exploring ways to improve the quality of bilateral cricket contests and to bring in increased spectator interest across all formats of the game.

Speaking of the discussions, ICC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Richardson, said: "The focus has been on solutions that will grow fan interest and engagement by delivering high quality cricket, with the best players playing in an environment where every match counts.

"Encouragingly there is an appetite from the ten full members for more context around all three formats of the game and we have consensus on a range of areas. This includes the details of ODI and T20 structures and principles around Test cricket schedules, which include the concept of a Test Champion play-off every two years, and the opportunity for more nations to be involved," Richardson said, in a detailed statement.

The current cycle of the ongoing Future Tours Program (FTP) ends in 2019-20 and the ICC has emphasised that a two-tier structure in Tests wouldn't be feasible for now, considering the complexities involved around the scheduling aspect. "There are some complexities, not least because of scheduling and existing structures, but we envisage the changes being implemented for 2019," the ICC CEO's statement read.

The members are now expected to go back and share their thoughts with the respective boards even as the game's apex body continues working on the creation of a structure that will keep all the three formats of the game healthy. "Work will continue to develop a clear structure and position for each format over the coming months as the ICC collectively focuses on improving bi-lateral cricket for fans and players in the long run," he said.

Anurag Thakur, the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) president, who had voiced his concerns about the proposed two-tier Test system, welcomed the move.

"I am thankful to the members of the ICC who understood our viewpoint and agreed to take this proposal off the table. As one of the key stakeholders in world cricket, BCCI would continue to have an inclusive approach and ensure that everyone's interest and the growth of cricket isn't compromised," Thakur was quoted as saying by PTI.

Cardiff: Pakistan bowling coach Azhar Mahmood has urged his side to follow England's example as they look to stage a One-Day International revival of their own.

The tourists head into Sunday's final ODI in Cardiff already 4-0 down in the five-match series and with just a lone Twenty20 international in Manchester on Wednesday to follow before they leave Britain.

Pakistan drew the preceding four Test series with England 2-2 to rise to number one in the world Test rankings.

By contrast they are a lowly ninth in the ODI table, with the 1992 champions in danger of failing to qualify automatically for the 2019 World Cup in England.

They will return for next year's Champions Trophy and Mahmood, a veteran of several seasons in English county cricket, hopes they learn quickly from their recent defeats.

"It's been a disappointing time for us," Mahmood, who saw Pakistan concede a world record total of 444 for three in the third ODI at Trent Bridge, told reporters in Cardiff on Saturday.

"The way we bowled at Nottingham wasn't good enough.

"We are going to make mistakes. As long as we learn from them, we hope we can turn the tables around."

That is what England have done following their embarrassing first-round exit at last year's 50-over World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

"Where England were 18 months ago, they changed the mentality and we have to do the same thing," Mahmood said.

"Mindset, a little bit more aggression, a bit more positive cricket, intent. We need to change this mentality and thinking. Moving forward, we've got young players who can change things around but it will take time."

'New faces'

Mahmood said the transformation in England's ODI form started when current assistant coach Paul Farbrace first took temporary charge following the sacking of Peter Moores after the World Cup.

"When Mooresy left and Farby took over, that's the time they thought, 'we've got not nothing to lose, we just need to express ourselves on the field'."

One of the players who has been emblematic of England's new style of ODI cricket is Mahmood's Surrey team-mate Jason Roy.

Mahmood's last appearance for the London-based county was a domestic Twenty20 against Kent at The Oval in July where opening batsman Roy struck 120 in a 37-run win.

"They (England) have got players like Jason Roy -- he can change the game in no time -- (Eoin) Morgan himself, Jos Buttler," said Mahmood.

"They've got a good unit of young players who understand the game and can play big shots and rotate the strike really well," the 41-year-old former Pakistan all-rounder added.

"Where we are lacking as a batting unit we are not rotating the strike and we don't have the guys who can clear the ropes.

"We need to find those guys very quickly if we want to improve in one-day cricket."

As for the stark contrast in Pakistan's Test and 50-over form, Mahmood said: "We've got a lot of new faces in the one-day side.

"If you see why we are number one in Test match cricket, we've got players who have been playing for the last five years so it's a consistency we need to give our one-day guys too."

Pakistan will have to make at least one change to their side in Cardiff from the team beaten by four wickets in Thursday's fourth ODI at Headingley after Mohammad Irfan was ruled out of the rest of the tour on Saturday.

The giant left-arm fast bowler, himself an injury replacement, only managed five overs in Leeds before being sidelined with cramp.
